Methane Under the Spotlight
Methane is colourless, odourless and highly flammable. It’s one of the most potent greenhouse gases out there and is a major factor in climate change and global warming. It’s having a serious effect on our environment, and serious action needs to be taken to deal with it.
If the recent COP27 climate talks are anything to go by, action against methane is starting to gain traction. COP is the annual conference for signatories to the United Nations National Framework on Climate Change, and the 27th edition took place in Egypt in november.
Reducing methane emissions was very much under the spotlight during the conference. This is good news for the environment if words can be turned into tangible results. Emissions have increased drastically in the last two years, and accounts for 30% of global warming since industrialisation.

Brazil’s Election Result Important for the Amazon
Brazilian leader Jair Bolsanora has presided over a government that saw deforestation in the Amazon soar to a 15-year high. He dismantled environmental protections and expanded the country's agricultural sector at the expense of the rainforest known as ‘the lungs of the planet’.
Environmentalists have been in despair, as in the first half of 2022 an area five times the size of New York City was cleared in the Amazon. Well, with the election result at the end of October, they can breathe a sigh of relief.
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, affectionately known as Lula, narrowly defeated the incumbent in what is seen as a victory for climate change. Lula was leader of Brazil from 2003 to 2010, and managed to drastically reduce deforestation in his tenure.

Beavers Saving Rivers in the US
An unlikely hero in the battle to save waterways in the American West has emerged in the shape of the humble beaver!
New research has shown how the dam building done by beavers actually helps protect rivers under threat from climate change. Their dams cause water levels to rise and spread into surrounding soils and smaller waterways, which filter excess nutrients and contaminants out of the water.
With droughts and floods on the rise, there’s also been a resurgence in beaver numbers, and consequently in the amount of beaver dams being built.
