Starting your Composting Journey? Read This!
What does your gardening strategy look like this spring? We’re sure you’ve been giving it a lot of thought during the cold winter months! If you’re like an ever-growing number of gardeners, you’re probably tossing up whether to begin home composting in your yard.
Well, what’s stopping you? Compost is a superfood for your plants, giving them the nutrients they need, improving the soil structure and helping them become resistant to pests and diseases.
The best news is, while there’s a bit of a learning curve, composting is really easy. Especially with Subpod! To give you a headstart, we’ve put together a bit of a beginners guide to home composting. What it is, why you should think about doing it, the benefits you’ll receive.
Check it out below. We hope it helps and that you decide to make this the year you start home composting!
AirBnb Donates to Pacific Cleanup
You’ve heard of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, right? It’s a massive collection of marine debris floating around the North Pacific Ocean. How massive? We’re talking an area three times the size of France. That massive!
No government has really stepped up to clean up the path, because it doesn’t fall in any country's jurisdiction. However, a Dutch nonprofit called The Ocean Cleanup has been working at cleaning it up since 2021. It’s a massive task, but they’ve so far removed nearly 440,000 pounds/220,000 kilograms out of the ocean.
The co-founder of Airbnb, Joe Gebbia, has recognised the monumental work being done by this company. He’s chimed in with a donation of $25-million to help them scale up to the largest and most cost effective ocean cleanup system ever created!
We can’t wait to see the positive effect of this donation, as we watch The Ocean Cleanup continue their good work. Read more about it all in the article below.
All About Carbon Sinks
It’s a term that you’ve probably heard getting thrown around in conversations about environmental sustainability. But do you know what a carbon sink is? (Hint: It’s not something you wash shredded paper in before composting!)
A carbon sink is basically a large natural system that absorbs and stores more carbon than it releases. Essentially they are nature’s way of balancing out the carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere through natural processes and human activities. An example of a carbon sink would be a forest, or an ocean or the soil.
Carbon sinks are becoming more and more important, because we’re generating far more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than we should be. Carbon dioxide is dangerously instrumental in global warming, so carbon sinks are essential in keeping a lid on this.
The article below is an amazing rundown of carbon sinks, why they’re so important and why we should be protecting them.
We’d definitely recommend giving it a read!
